North Shore Elementary

Summary:

North Shore Elementary is a public elementary school in Jacksonville, Florida, serving 701 students in grades PK-5, with a predominantly African American student population of over 84%.

North Shore Elementary faces significant challenges, including consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 42.9% to 64.7% over the past few years, which is much higher than the district and state averages. Academically, the school's performance on standardized tests is well below the district and state levels, with only 25% of 3rd graders proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 49% in the Duval School District and 55% statewide. Additionally, North Shore Elementary has an extremely high percentage of students, 84.62% to 85.99%, qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

When comparing North Shore Elementary to nearby schools in the same district, such as Susie E. Tolbert Elementary, R.V. Daniels Elementary, and John E. Ford K-8, which also have high percentages of African American students and high rates of free and reduced lunch eligibility, these nearby schools generally outperform North Shore Elementary on academic measures, suggesting that factors beyond just student demographics may be contributing to the school's underperformance.

Open Quote I'm so unhappy with this school. My child have severe melt downs that could be avoided if the staff would take time out to listen to him and not label him as a problem child. I know as a parent my child has a problem that's deeper then ADHD and I'm trying my best to get him more help or to get him where he need to be in order to prosper and grow. At this point this school/staff is not qualified to handle my child and it's really upsetting because their not qualified to handle him. That they would suspend him from school and hinder him from learning...maybe I need to take it up with the school board and see where we can go from there. Now I do give credit to a few of the staff members that handles my child very well no names need to be given... At the end of the day I need my baby out of this school ASAP Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
