Excelsior Prep Charter School Of Hialeah

Summary:

Excelsior Prep Charter School Of Hialeah is a public charter elementary school serving 287 students in grades K-8 in Hialeah, Florida, which is part of the Miami-Dade school district.

While Excelsior Prep has a student population that is 97.91% Hispanic, similar to nearby schools, it faces significant challenges compared to its peers. The school has consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 35.8% to 53.3% over the past 5 years, much higher than the 13.8% to 28.8% rates at surrounding schools like Springview Elementary and Integrated Science And Asian Culture (ISAAC) Academy. Excelsior Prep's test scores are also significantly lower than the Miami-Dade and Florida state averages, with only 32% of 3rd-8th grade students proficient in English Language Arts and 9-62% proficient in math, compared to 54-65% proficiency in the surrounding district and state.

Despite spending between $10,325-$11,221 per student, comparable to nearby traditional public schools, Excelsior Prep has consistently ranked in the bottom 10-20% of Florida elementary schools, with a 0-1 out of 5 star rating from SchoolDigger. This suggests the school's challenges may not be solely due to funding, but rather factors like instructional quality, school culture, and student/family engagement. Addressing these issues will be crucial for Excelsior Prep to improve student outcomes and better serve its high-needs student population.

Open Quote My kids have attened the school for 3 yrs. During these yrs. Curriculum is very poor, and they don't keep to there dress code. Kids with pants bellow waist showing underwares. They made a school shirt for field trip and for friday use. On fridays kids pay a dollor to wear shirt and this shirt is to be used also for field trips. One in the whole year! Not fare to charge for the use of this shirt. Teachers are not enthusiastic nor seem too knowledgeable in the subject being taught. I will not be returning next yr. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
