Imater Academy

Summary:

Imater Academy is a public charter elementary school in Hialeah, Florida, serving 657 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. While the school faces some challenges, it has maintained a consistent 3-star rating from SchoolDigger and shown strengths in specific grade levels.

Imater Academy stands out for its high percentage of Hispanic students (96.5%), significantly higher than the surrounding schools, which range from 92-99% Hispanic. The school also has a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 10.6% in 2020-2021 to 28.8% in 2022-2023, notably higher than the 13.8% to 25.2% range of nearby schools. However, Imater Academy has outperformed the Miami-Dade district and the state of Florida in 4th-grade English Language Arts (69% proficient) and 4th-grade Math (62% proficient) in the 2023-2024 school year.

Imater Academy serves a population with significant economic challenges, with 89.65% to 96.21% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, much higher than the 41.85% to 78.99% range of surrounding schools. This high poverty rate may contribute to the school's higher chronic absenteeism and lower overall test scores. When compared to nearby charter schools, Integrated Science And Asian Culture (ISAAC) Academy consistently outperforms Imater Academy, while Excelsior Prep Charter School of Hialeah struggles with lower test scores and higher chronic absenteeism.

Open Quote This school is horrible. So many uncertified teachers. Students not receiving services that they are suppose to receive. The administration team has no idea what is going on as they have little to no observations of their teachers. School looks one way on paper but in reality is a nightmare. All good teachers leave. When a school has bad teacher turn around you know something is wrong. Beware! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
