Palm Springs Elementary School

Summary:

Palm Springs Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Hialeah, Florida, serving 559 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade, and is part of the Miami-Dade school district.

While Palm Springs Elementary shares the same district and overall rating as the surrounding schools, it consistently underperforms them in key metrics. The school has a significantly higher Hispanic student population (96.42%) compared to nearby schools, and has seen a steady increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 9.1% in 2018-2019 to 22.5% in 2022-2023. Additionally, Palm Springs Elementary consistently underperforms the district and state averages in English Language Arts and Math proficiency across all grade levels, with its 3rd-grade ELA proficiency at 33% in 2023-2024, compared to 56% for the district and 55% for the state. The school also has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 57.96% to 84.84% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the surrounding schools.

Despite the higher per-student spending at Palm Springs Elementary, ranging from $11,415 to $14,909 over the past few years, the school's academic performance does not reflect the additional resources. This suggests that the school may need to re-evaluate how resources are allocated and utilized to better support student learning. The unique demographic characteristics and challenges faced by Palm Springs Elementary indicate the need for targeted support and interventions to address the specific needs of its student population and improve overall academic outcomes.

Open Quote Overall experience
Pros: The school is well organized , staff is friendly and helpful, teachers are understanding and accommodates students to their needs , Cafeteria food is better than most of the schools I have seen and been. I like the after-school program : staff is friendly , feel secure leaving my children with them as well as the use of computer lab for I-ready and help with their homework .
Cons: I wished there was sports and dance programs. Would like the school to have better resources for the children, and better school maintenance ( Paint /TV/ etc ) yet, parents, teacher and staff help to maintain what the school already has.
Principal seen to be strict , but at the same time, kind and nice to students, seems very involve with the school activities, and students progress . Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
