Marcus A. Milam K-8 Center

Summary:

Marcus A. Milam K-8 Center is a public school in Hialeah, Florida, serving 983 students from prekindergarten through 8th grade. The school has a predominantly Hispanic student population, with 98.07% of students identifying as Hispanic, significantly higher than the surrounding schools in the Miami-Dade school district.

Despite the school's high Hispanic enrollment, its academic performance lags behind the district and state averages. In the 2023-2024 school year, the school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts ranged from 33% to 45%, compared to 54-57% for Miami-Dade and 50-55% for Florida. In Math, the school's proficiency rates ranged from 35% to 62%, compared to 49-65% for Miami-Dade and 47-60% for Florida. The school also experiences high rates of chronic absenteeism, ranging from 12.9% to 30.5% over the past few years, significantly higher than the surrounding schools, which have chronic absenteeism rates ranging from 15.0% to 27.6%.

Additionally, Meadowlane Elementary School, Miami Lakes K-8 Center, and other nearby schools have more diverse student populations but higher test scores than Marcus A. Milam K-8 Center, suggesting that factors beyond racial composition may be contributing to the school's academic challenges. The school's high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 68.77% to 88.37%, also indicates a high level of economic disadvantage among its student population, which may be another factor impacting student performance.

Open Quote This school lacks leadership and good teachers. The attitude is one of mediocrity and poor customer service. They also lack parental involvement. I would not recommend this school to any family. There are better schools out there with better administration. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
