Gulfstream Elementary School

Summary:

Gulfstream Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Cutler Bay, Florida, serving 603 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Miami-Dade County Public School District, which is ranked 24th out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Gulfstream Elementary School stands out for its strong academic performance, consistently outperforming the Miami-Dade and Florida state averages in key test score metrics, such as 71% proficiency in 5th grade science, 68% in 5th grade math, and 70% in 5th grade English language arts. However, the school faces challenges with a higher chronic absenteeism rate, ranging from 23.9% to 41.6%, which is significantly higher than the state and district averages. Additionally, Gulfstream Elementary has a high percentage of students, ranging from 70.81% to 84.65%, receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a higher proportion of economically disadvantaged students compared to nearby schools.

Interestingly, Gulfstream Elementary School has a significantly higher spending per student, ranging from $18,285 to $22,507, compared to the nearby schools, which have spending per student ranging from $9,319 to $23,728. This suggests the school may have access to more resources and funding, which could be contributing to its strong academic performance. However, the school's high chronic absenteeism rate and high percentage of economically disadvantaged students indicate a need for additional support and strategies to address these challenges while maintaining its academic excellence.

Open Quote Great school. In the 2011-2012 school year, Gulfstream got an A rating from the state even with the new higher standard that Florida made. The Principle that was brought in the previous year really has changed the feeling of the school. She has a very open door policy with parents. I highly recommend Gulfstream. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
