Hernando Elementary School

Summary:

Hernando Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-5 in Hernando, Florida, which is part of the Citrus School District. The school has seen a decline in its statewide ranking in recent years, dropping from a high of 477 out of 2,118 Florida elementary schools in 2017-2018 to 930 out of 2,256 in the most recent 2023-2024 school year.

Hernando Elementary has a significantly higher percentage of white students (77.61%) compared to the state average and nearby schools, such as Dunnellon Elementary and Floral City Elementary. However, the school has consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 20% in 2019-2020 to 32.5% in 2021-2022, which is significantly higher than the state and district averages. Additionally, Hernando Elementary has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at 70.97% in the 2022-2023 school year, much higher than the state and district averages.

Despite these challenges, Hernando Elementary generally performs better than the Citrus district and state averages on standardized tests, particularly in math. For example, in 2023-2024, 71% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in math, compared to 61% for the district and 60% for the state. However, the school lags behind higher-performing schools in the Citrus district, such as Rock Crusher Elementary and Pleasant Grove Elementary.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
