Margate Middle School

Summary:

Margate Middle School is a public middle school in Margate, Florida, serving 1,094 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Broward County School District, which is ranked 30th out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Margate Middle School stands out for its significantly higher percentage of African American students (63.35%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 26.75% to 82.76% African American. Academically, the school outperforms the Broward County and Florida state averages in several key test areas, including End-of-Course (EOC) exams in Algebra 1, Geometry, and Biology 1. However, the school has seen a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 5.4% in 2019-2020 to 25.2% in 2022-2023. Additionally, Margate Middle School has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 70.75% to 77.33% over the past three years, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

While Margate Middle School outperforms many nearby schools, it lags behind some of the higher-performing schools in the area, such as Coral Springs Middle School and Ramblewood Middle School, in overall academic achievement. Addressing the chronic absenteeism issue and supporting the school's economically disadvantaged population could help Margate Middle School improve its performance and better serve its diverse student body.

Open Quote It is a great school. It is number one in the nation in Vocabulary.com It has an award winning STEM program as well as a great band and wonderful Spanish program. The Spanish program and 10 other courses offer HS credit. It is a Title One School but it is quite good in comparison to most. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
