Atlantic West Elementary School

Summary:

Atlantic West Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Margate, Florida, serving 622 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Broward County School District, which is ranked 30th out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Atlantic West Elementary School has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (58.36%) compared to nearby schools, it consistently underperforms academically. The school's test scores are 10-20 percentage points lower than the Broward County and Florida state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. Additionally, Atlantic West Elementary School has very high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 31.2% to 38.9% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the nearby schools. Despite having the highest spending per student among the nearby schools, ranging from $11,488 to $14,405 over the past few years, the school's academic performance does not reflect this additional investment.

The stark differences in academic performance between Atlantic West Elementary School and the nearby schools, such as West Broward Academy, Imagine Charter School At North Lauderdale Elementary, and Ramblewood Elementary School, raise questions about equity and the distribution of resources within the Broward County school system. While Atlantic West Elementary School faces significant challenges, the data suggests that there are opportunities for improvement by addressing the root causes of the school's underperformance, such as chronic absenteeism and targeted instructional strategies.

Open Quote I work in several schools. Atlantic West has very caring teachers that work hard to help children achieve. They have been "A" rated for several years now, and this rating reflects the teachers' dedication to the students at this school. The school has a cluster for students with autism, and the cluster teachers also work hard to improve their students' achievement. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
