Harbordale Elementary School

Summary:

Harbordale Elementary School is a public elementary school in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, serving 487 students in grades PK-5 and part of the Broward County School District. This high-performing school consistently outperforms the district and state averages in academic achievement, with a diverse student population and efficient resource allocation.

Harbordale Elementary's academic performance is particularly impressive, with 5th-grade students scoring significantly higher on standardized tests compared to the North Side Elementary, Riverland Elementary, and Thurgood Marshall Elementary schools in the area. The school's racial diversity, with a student body that is 52.36% White, 11.29% African American, 27.72% Hispanic, and 2.46% Asian, is also a notable strength. However, the school has seen a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism, from 4.1% in 2019-2020 to 20.8% in 2022-2023, which is an area the school may need to address.

Harbordale Elementary's success can be attributed to its effective teaching practices, supportive learning environment, and the engagement of its diverse student population. The school's spending per student ($11,245 in 2022-2023) is lower than some nearby schools, yet it consistently ranks in the top 25% of Florida elementary schools, with a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger. This efficient use of resources, combined with the school's strong academic performance and diverse student body, make Harbordale Elementary an attractive option for families in the Fort Lauderdale area.

Open Quote I can’t say enough good things about this school. The principal is fantastic and has been there forever. The teachers often stay their entire career. It’s like a family. Close Quote

Open Quote I've been a parent of a student at Harbordale for two years and it's been a great experience. The school is on the smaller side, but it makes it feel more familiar. Most of the staff know my child's name and she knows theirs. Parent Involvement/Volunteering is amazing and provides additional learning resources for the kids that the State does not fund. The teachers we had so far, were great at what they do and I feel my child learned more than some of her friends at other schools. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
