North Side Elementary School

Summary:

North Side Elementary School is a public elementary school in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, serving 329 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Broward District, which is ranked 30 out of 68 districts in the state and rated 3 stars out of 5.

While North Side Elementary shares the same district and overall rating as many nearby schools, it stands out with a significantly higher percentage of African American students (84.8%) compared to its neighbors, which range from 3.99% to 95.35% African American. The school also faces challenges, including consistently high chronic absenteeism rates (40.5% to 55.1%) and significantly lower test scores in English Language Arts and Math compared to the Broward and Florida state averages. For example, in 2023-2024, only 42% of 3rd graders at North Side were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 57% in Broward and 55% statewide. Additionally, North Side has a very high percentage of students (80.8% to 87.05%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

Despite the school's relatively high spending per student, ranging from $14,835 to $16,098 over the past few years, the continued low academic performance suggests that the resources may not be effectively targeted or utilized to improve student outcomes. Addressing the issues at North Side Elementary will likely require a comprehensive, data-driven approach that focuses on improving attendance, providing targeted academic interventions, and ensuring that resources are allocated to support the unique needs of the school's predominantly African American and economically disadvantaged student population.

Open Quote Taught for two weeks and left. These kids don't respect anyone. They talk back to teacher, fight in front of teachers. I am surprise they are not ranked lower because they have 4th graders that read at Pre-K levels. Administration does not care, just move on to next thing. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
