Academy of Advanced Learning

Summary:

Academy of Advanced Learning is a public charter elementary school serving 789 students in grades K-8 in Aurora, Colorado, which is part of the Aurora Joint District No. 28. The school has a predominantly Hispanic student population (73.26%) and a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds (66.41% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch).

Despite serving a diverse student population, Academy of Advanced Learning consistently ranks in the bottom half of Colorado elementary schools, receiving a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's academic performance, as measured by CMAS tests, is significantly lower than the state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, only 22.9% of students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the state average of 44.1% and the district average of 24.2%. The school's performance is particularly low for certain student subgroups, such as African American and English Language Learner students.

In comparison, nearby schools like Aurora Quest K-8 and Clara Brown Entrepreneurial Academy significantly outperform Academy of Advanced Learning on academic measures, with much higher proficiency rates on CMAS tests and higher statewide rankings. These nearby schools serve student populations that are more racially and socioeconomically diverse, yet they are able to achieve much stronger academic outcomes. The data suggests that Academy of Advanced Learning has significant room for improvement, and examining the practices and strategies of the higher-performing nearby schools could provide insights into effective approaches for supporting the unique needs of the Academy of Advanced Learning student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter struggled academically and socially at her previous schools. This is her 5th school since preschool and I cannot express how thankful we are for the staff. My daughter has grown 2-4 years in each subject in the first quarter of school alone. Despite having learning disabilities the staff has shown her that she is fully capable, and have done it all in a way that shouts respect. I hope that other families are able to get the full benefit of this school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
