East Middle School

Summary:

East Middle School is a public middle school located in Aurora, Colorado, serving 840 students in grades 6-8 with a diverse student population. The school consistently underperforms compared to district and state averages, ranking in the bottom 20% of Colorado middle schools with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Academically, only 13% of East Middle School students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, and just 9.3% were proficient or better in Math, far below the district and state averages. The school's performance is particularly concerning for Hispanic students and Gifted and Talented students, who rank in the bottom 10% of Colorado middle schools. With 92.5% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, the high level of economic disadvantage among the student population may be a contributing factor to the school's struggles.

When compared to nearby schools in the Aurora Joint District No. 28, East Middle School is clearly underperforming. For example, Mrachek Middle School and Aurora Hills Middle School have higher academic performance and statewide rankings. Despite the school's low performance, there is little evidence of significant improvement over the past several years, indicating a need for more effective interventions and support to address the unique challenges facing East Middle School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote There was never a day that I felt safe at East Middle School. This school is run by the students. Students do whatever they want, talk back to teachers, call teachers names, throw things at the teachers, use their cellphones in class, trash school property….the list goes on. This school has up to 11 fights in one day, stacks of daily referrals, and a classroom that is full of those that are suspended for the week. If you are a kid who listens to the teacher and does your work and actually is eager to learn - this is not the place for you.
Not only a poor communicator, Principal, Biaze Houston is an inept leader. She and her administrators are always in a meeting. They have limited knowledge of what is actually going on in the school. Teachers, who are already overloaded, are required to sub for teachers who are absent, while there are several administrators sitting around in some “important” meeting. Despite all of these meetings, conditions at East Middle School continue to get worse. What do Ms. Houston and her team of meeting-loving administrators plan to do moving forward? Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
