Ross Montessori School

Summary:

Ross Montessori School is a public charter elementary and middle school located in Carbondale, Colorado, serving 250 students from kindergarten through 8th grade. The school has a diverse student population, with 63.6% White and 32.4% Hispanic students.

Academically, Ross Montessori School has had a mixed performance compared to the state and its district, the Roaring Fork School District No. Re-1. While the school has performed better than the district in English Language Arts proficiency, it has struggled in Math, with a 2023-2024 proficiency rate of 22.4% compared to 29.7% for the district and 34.2% for the state. The school's statewide ranking has fluctuated over the years, currently standing at 604 out of 943 Colorado elementary schools with a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. Additionally, the school's performance has varied between male and female students, with male students ranking 545 out of 594 Colorado elementary schools in 2021-2022.

Compared to other nearby schools in the Roaring Fork School District, Ross Montessori School generally performs better in English Language Arts but struggles more in Math. The school's relatively high student-teacher ratio, ranging from 18.6 to 21 students per teacher, is also higher than the nearby schools in the district. These factors, along with the school's declining performance over time, suggest that Ross Montessori School may need to focus on improving its Math instruction and addressing any gender-based achievement disparities to better serve its diverse student population.

Open Quote Many families and staff continue to leave this school- turn and RUN! Your child will not receive language, music, extracurriculars, or other staple learning pieces standard for education today. Bullying takes place and is ignored, including the principal humiliating children and staff alike.
Families and staff have a long history of issues with the principal, who has established a web of control that influences the Board of Directors, therefore response is dismissive and places blame on children (or families, or staff). Because this is a public charter, there is next to no oversight above the school's Board.
Whether looking for work or schooling, search elsewhere. The area has excellent public school options, with several opportunities for your child to be supported and challenged. You may be seeking Montessori specifically, but Ross leadership is not authentic in this pursuit. Best of luck, and make sure you double-check the systems in place that keep the school you choose accountable! For Ross, there is not safety in process. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
