Roosevelt Elementary

Summary:

Roosevelt Elementary is a public K-8 school in Redwood City, California, serving a student population of 529. The school is part of the Redwood City Elementary School District, which is ranked 875 out of 1,568 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating.

Roosevelt Elementary has seen a significant decline in its statewide ranking, dropping from a 3-star rating in 2017-2018 to a 1-star rating in 2023-2024. This is largely due to the school's high chronic absenteeism rates, which have risen from 9.5% in 2018-2019 to 31.0% in 2021-2022, notably higher than the district average. Additionally, Roosevelt Elementary consistently underperforms the district and state in both English Language Arts and Mathematics proficiency, with only 16.26% of students proficient or better in ELA and proficiency rates ranging from 6.25% in 8th grade to 35.09% in 3rd grade in Mathematics.

Compared to nearby schools in the Redwood City Elementary district, such as Clifford Elementary and Roy Cloud Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary's performance is significantly lower across various metrics, including test scores and student-teacher ratios. The school's high rates of free and reduced-price lunch, ranging from 59.05% to 71.27%, may be contributing factors to its academic challenges. Addressing these issues through targeted interventions and community engagement will be crucial for Roosevelt Elementary to improve its standing and provide a high-quality education for its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My review is based mostly on the younger elementary classes as my oldest started in Kindergarten at Roosevelt and is now in second grade. My second child is also in TK this year.
In the 3 years we've been at Roosevelt, we have been very happy with the school and the PBL program. The students learn while answering a "burning question" about whatever topic they are studying, which allows them to dig deeper into subjects they are most interested in. What I like best is that they are learning how to learn-- researching and asking questions from the beginning, building skills I wasn't taught until high school. I'll never forget when my son came home from 1st grade and showed me how to to a Brain Storm-- and I told him I had done the same thing at work that day!
I also really love the community in the school. There is a great group of parents that are really invested in doing what they can to fund raise and bring in more programs and Principle Mercer has been removing any road block to help. The school garden has really blossomed over the last few years and on-site after school options extracurricular options have expanded this year to include chess, Spanish and coding.
We look forward to many more years at Roosevelt! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
