Melrose Leadership Academy

Summary:

Melrose Leadership Academy is a public elementary school serving 656 students in grades K-8 in Oakland, California, which is part of the Oakland Unified School District. The school consistently outperforms the district and the state in academic achievement, with over 55% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts/Literacy and 39% in Mathematics, significantly higher than the district and state averages.

Melrose Leadership Academy's strong performance extends across different student subgroups, with female, male, Hispanic, and White students all ranking well above the state average in English Language Arts/Literacy. However, the school has experienced fluctuations in chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 3.8% to 45%, which is an area of concern. Additionally, while Melrose Leadership Academy outperforms nearby Horace Mann Elementary, Allendale Elementary, and Bridges @ Melrose Academy Elementary, it lags behind the high-achieving Redwood Heights Elementary, which is located just 1.33 miles away.

The school's performance also compares favorably to the nearby Urban Montessori Charter school, which demonstrates strong academic achievement as well. This suggests that the charter school model may be providing an effective alternative for families in the area. Overall, Melrose Leadership Academy is a relatively high-performing school within the Oakland Unified School District, but the chronic absenteeism rates and the performance gap compared to nearby high-achieving schools present areas for further improvement and investigation.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote melrose leadership needs to rethink how they treat their students of color, the treachers and the parents are very baised in dealing with other parents that are raising their childern as single parents. The Prinicpal shows favortism towards other which if you set in one of their meetings you see their is no order of any kind yet they want your money for all diffrent donations which their is no type of thank you give from the school, yet you will get a phone call or a letter asking for things and time that most single working parents dont have all the time you rank a 2.... About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
