Stephen R. Fitz Intermediate

Summary:

Stephen R. Fitz Intermediate is a public middle school in Santa Ana, California, serving 507 students in grades 7-8 and part of the Garden Grove Unified School District.

While the school's performance on standardized tests is generally below the district and state averages, it does have some bright spots. For example, the school's English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency rates for Hispanic students rank in the top 35% of California middle schools. However, the school struggles significantly in Mathematics, with proficiency rates 10-20 percentage points below the district and state. Additionally, Stephen R. Fitz Intermediate has experienced a concerning rise in chronic absenteeism, from 5.8% in 2017-2018 to 19.7% in 2022-2023, notably higher than the district's average of around 15%.

Compared to nearby schools, Stephen R. Fitz Intermediate lags behind higher-performing Dr. Walter C. Ralston Intermediate and Sarah McGarvin Intermediate, which rank in the top 25% and top 5% of California middle schools, respectively. However, the school does outperform some lower-performing schools in the Santa Ana Unified District, such as Gonzalo Felicitas Mendez Fundamental Intermediate and Gerald P. Carr Intermediate. The school's high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, over 90%, likely contributes to its lower academic performance compared to more affluent nearby schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote All of the things people are telling us about this school is all fake!! Nobody and I mean nobody has ever gotten shot or stabbed, and we even get really good reviews from other administrators, or whatever they were. Saying that our school has very respectful students. And our school is the only school, as far as I know to be modernized!! And I'm pretty sure we are the only school with a drumline. All I'm saying is that if you like having fun/cool teachers then come to Fitz. : Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
