Georgetown Elementary

Summary:

Georgetown Elementary is a public elementary school serving 251 students in grades K-6 in Georgetown, California, which is part of the Black Oak Mine Unified School District. However, the school faces significant challenges, with higher chronic absenteeism rates, lower test scores, and a higher percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds compared to the district and state averages.

Georgetown Elementary has a chronic absenteeism rate of 40.7%, which is much higher than the district's 27.2% at Northside Elementary and the state's average of 15-20%. The school also consistently underperforms the district and state in Smarter Balanced Assessments for English Language Arts and Mathematics, with only 21.99% of students proficient or better in ELA, compared to 39.36% for the district and 47.04% for the state. Additionally, 46.22% of Georgetown Elementary students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, a higher percentage than the 29.25% at Sierra Elementary and the 40.59% at the nearby Louisiana Schnell Elementary.

The performance of Georgetown Elementary has been declining over the years, with its statewide ranking dropping from 2,736 out of 5,883 California elementary schools in 2021-2022 to 4,451 out of 5,862 in 2023-2024, and its SchoolDigger rating decreasing from 3 stars to 1 star during this period. The school's struggles are particularly evident in the performance of its white students and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, who rank in the bottom 10-15% of California elementary schools in these categories. These challenges suggest that Georgetown Elementary may require targeted interventions and support to address the unique needs of its student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We completed 2 years K-1 at GS. We encountered multiple, serious unaddressed problems with a teacher and administration including child health & safety issues that due to no satisfactory resolution have led us to find schooling elsewhere- which isn't difficult to do since there is American River charter school in Garden Valley.

The good points? Some great friends have their kids there and they do the best they can with what they are working with.

There are some very caring and lovely people working there as staff & teachers.
They have a beautiful greenhouse and garden on site that the kids got to work in a couple times the years we were there.

It's a gorgeous location in a beautiful forest setting next to a unique nature preserve (that sad enough isn't utilized by the school except to run the upper grade PE class through). Neither year we were there did we have any event in the nature center except for the end of the year graduation for Kindergarten in the outdoor amphitheater. A real oversight and loss for the students there.

In the year since changing to our new school, we've had 3 events in the nature center including a camp out, mine shaft exploration, tree and plant identification walks, docents on insect life in the waterways and picnics.

We are sorry Georgetown school was unable to be responsive to our educational needs. We gave it a go. But it became a no-go.

The bottom line? My child wasn't happy there so was unable to benefit from the few good things the place does have going for it. It was a real loss to part our friends and families we love there. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
