Summary:

Sierra High is a public high school located in Azusa, California, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 183 students. The school is part of the Azusa Unified School District, which is ranked 1100 out of 1568 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Sierra High has consistently ranked in the bottom 25% of California high schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's four-year graduation rate has fluctuated between 71.8% and 88.2%, and its dropout rate has ranged from 9.8% to 20.6% in recent years, significantly worse than the nearby Glendora High and Mt. SAC Early College Academy, which have graduation rates above 90% and dropout rates below 5%. Sierra High also has a very high chronic absenteeism rate, ranging from 40.4% to 60.5%, much higher than the state average and the nearby schools.

Academically, Sierra High's performance on state assessments is significantly lower than the state and district averages, as well as the nearby schools. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 36.76% of Sierra High's 11th-grade students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 51.44% in the Azusa Unified district and 55.73% statewide. In mathematics, the proficiency rate for 11th-grade students was just 1.49%, compared to 22.3% in the district and 27.9% statewide. The school's struggles are particularly pronounced for certain student subgroups, and the high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds may be a contributing factor to the school's poor performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My name is Suzuki Farmer and I was a student at Sierra High school for 2 years in the year of 2010 and 2011.Wooohoo class of 2011! I went their both junior and senior year. I have to say if it was not for me having the opportunity to attend Sierra High, I would have not graduated. The staff is so friendly and so helpful. I have to give special thanks to Mrs.Kardashian of course , she is the absolute best! She is always smiling you will never see her mad well, unless you are doing something bad but either way she smiles almost all the time and the best part I have to say was being office aid ! the staff in the office is so fun and talkative! but we never got off task that forsure we had our moments of fun "chismes" but then when it came to office work, attendance or etc we did it right. I recommend this school to every kid out there . the teachers DO care , one of the realist teachers is Mr. Lowery he is so cool and also Mrs.Oldaker she was my fav. teacher anyhow know their are many rumors out their about the school but it's not how you think it is they have an officer on duty and they are always watching you , man I miss Officer Greg he retired the yr. I graduated he was funny and strict. for any of you who think you cannot do it and Graduate You can , and especially if you go to sierra high school they help so much it is so easy to learn. you will learn stuff you though was hard you will do things you never thought you could do because they break things down for you and don't rush into it or judge you when you get the answer wrong .well my work here is done! if anyone from sierra high reads this tell all the teachers and staff that i Say hello ! i miss them thanks alot Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
