Educational & Verma Pastor Elementary School

Summary:

Educational & Verma Pastor Elementary School is a public school in Phoenix, Arizona, serving grades PK-8 with a total enrollment of 482 students. The school is part of the Roosevelt Elementary District, which is ranked 455 out of 540 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

The school consistently ranks in the bottom 10-20% of Arizona elementary schools, with a ranking between 914 and 1,098 out of 1,000-1,245 schools over the past several years. Its performance on state assessments is significantly below the state and district averages, with proficiency rates ranging from 13% to 25% in English Language Arts and 2% to 23% in Mathematics, compared to state averages of 37% to 45% and 27% to 43%, respectively. The school's low performance is particularly pronounced for African American and Hispanic students, who rank in the bottom 10-20% of their respective subgroups in the state. With around 90% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, the school's high level of economic disadvantage may be a contributing factor to its academic challenges.

In contrast, nearby schools like Ignacio Conchos School, Bernard Black Elementary School, and John R Davis School, which are also part of the Roosevelt Elementary District, have generally higher academic performance and serve more economically diverse student populations. The persistent challenges faced by Educational & Verma Pastor Elementary School suggest the need for targeted interventions and support to address the unique needs of its community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I had the opportunity to teach at this school on a short-term basis. During my time at this school, the assistant principal was visible, the teachers were in control, and the students for the most part understood what was expected of them. Students seemed to enjoy being there as well as the teachers. I noticed that the teachers were more veterans and had been teaching for quite sometime. If there was a discipline problem, the situation was taken care of immediately and most students wanted to achieve. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
