Cesar E Chavez Community School

Summary:

Cesar E Chavez Community School is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Phoenix, Arizona, with a student population of 418 that is predominantly Hispanic. The school faces significant academic and socioeconomic challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom 10-15% of Arizona elementary schools based on its poor performance on state assessments.

Cesar E Chavez Community School's academic struggles are particularly pronounced for female students, Hispanic students, and students with special needs, with the school ranking in the bottom 5% of Arizona elementary schools for these subgroups. The school has also seen a concerning increase in its dropout rate, rising from 0% in recent years to 3.4% in the 2021-2022 school year. Despite the high level of economic disadvantage among the student population, with over 95% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, the school's per-student spending has increased over the years, reaching $13,199 in the 2021-2022 school year.

Interestingly, the nearby schools within the Roosevelt Elementary District, such as Irene Lopez School and Sunland Elementary School, also perform poorly on state assessments and have low SchoolDigger rankings, but generally outperform Cesar E Chavez Community School across various metrics. This suggests that the challenges faced by Cesar E Chavez Community School may require a comprehensive and targeted approach to address the multifaceted issues impacting student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Unfortunately for such a nice looking school, the students are in control of this school. I've never seen so many teachers look like they just want to go home. They are constantly using classroom management to get the students on task and this is taking away from teaching and learning. The administrators have to remind the students every day on the announcement how they are suppose to act. Students see that discipline is not really administered at the school so they take advantage of the situation. The administrators haven't a clue on making this school better. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
