Harris Elementary School

Summary:

Harris Elementary School is a public elementary school in Mesa, Arizona, serving 384 students in grades PK-6. The school is part of the Gilbert Unified District, which is ranked 90 out of 288 districts in the state.

Despite being part of a relatively high-performing district, Harris Elementary consistently underperforms compared to the district and state averages in standardized test scores for English Language Arts and Mathematics. The school has a low statewide ranking, placing in the bottom half of Arizona elementary schools, and struggles to support certain student subgroups, such as White, African American, and special education students. Additionally, Harris Elementary has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating significant socioeconomic challenges.

When comparing Harris Elementary to nearby schools within the Gilbert Unified District, such as Burk Elementary and Oak Tree Elementary, Harris consistently underperforms in academic measures and statewide rankings. This suggests that the challenges faced by Harris Elementary are not shared by all schools in the district, and targeted interventions and support are needed to improve student outcomes and close achievement gaps.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Harris Elementary School is a welcoming and friendly school! The staff is attentive and willing to help, even when the student is not in their direct classroom. The principal, Mr. Roth, has an obvious passion for his staff and students and is always willing to hear out a parent. Students appear happy to be at Harris and I know there are many students who attend through Open Enrollment, which shows that Harris is the place to be! We love Harris! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
