Highland Avenue Elementary School

Summary:

Highland Avenue Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 430 students in grades PK-5 in Montgomery, Alabama, which is part of the Montgomery County School District, ranked 110 out of 137 districts in the state with a 1-star rating.

Highland Avenue Elementary has a significantly higher percentage of African American (64.88%) and Hispanic (31.4%) students compared to nearby schools, and consistently ranks among the lowest-performing elementary schools in Alabama, with proficiency rates well below the state and county averages in core subjects like Mathematics and English. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 8.2% of 3rd graders, 4.76% of 4th graders, and 1.89% of 5th graders were proficient in Mathematics, compared to the state averages of 42.16%, 38.32%, and 37.13%, respectively. The school also has a very high percentage of students (over 88%) who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

While the nearby schools, such as Morris Elementary, Davis Elementary, and Flowers Elementary, also struggle academically and have high percentages of economically disadvantaged students, Highland Avenue consistently performs worse than these schools across all grade levels and subject areas. The school's academic performance has been steadily declining over the past several years, and its African American and Hispanic student subgroups rank among the lowest in the state, indicating significant achievement gaps. Despite the high level of economic disadvantage among the student population, Highland Avenue's per-student spending is not significantly higher than the surrounding schools, suggesting a potential lack of targeted resources and support for this high-need school.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I am a grandparent of a student that goes to Highland Ave.
Today was a special day for her due to being in the A-B Honor Roll program.
As my daughter got there to enjoy her daughters festivities rap music was blaring and she barely could hear the speaker when they called my granddaughter's name. My daughter was they only one who clapped for my granddaughter which being in the second grade it was a big deal to her. She is a loving and thoughtful little girl and loves and is kind to everyone. (We have already had to go to the school once about her being mistreated by a child.) This was supposed to be a happy day for those who worked hard to get good grades and I am upset to think one race is being treated differently (and I know the come back on that is) but for a school with young children in it you would think the parents would be happy for all kids and would teach their children to be happy for everyone. I am hurt for my granddaughter and I think the school officials should and could be more neutral with their programs. I am pulling my granddaughter out of the school asap. Hopefully the next school will have some class about them and MAKE sure everyone gets treated the same. The school motto is we are ALL family. NOT!!!!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
