McCalla Elementary School

Summary:

McCalla Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 697 students in grades PK-5 in Bessemer, Alabama, which is part of the Jefferson County School District. This school has a diverse student population, with a higher percentage of African American (54.81%) and Hispanic (16.21%) students compared to surrounding schools.

Despite its diverse student body, McCalla Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Alabama elementary schools over the past decade, maintaining a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's academic performance, as measured by proficiency rates in math, science, and English language arts, is below the state and county averages across all grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, only 27.43% of 3rd graders were proficient in math, compared to the state average of 42.16%. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 43.93% to 68.87% over the past three school years, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

While McCalla Elementary performs relatively well for its African American and Hispanic student subgroups compared to other schools, it struggles with large achievement gaps between these subgroups and the White and English Language Learner students. This suggests a need to address equity and opportunity gaps within the school. Nearby schools, such as Helena Intermediate School in Shelby County, consistently outperform McCalla Elementary across all grade levels and subject areas, indicating that significant interventions and support are needed to improve student outcomes at McCalla Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Do not send your kids to this school. They have a horrible way of dealing with bullying. My son was bullied to the point of attempted suicide. No one helping. I’ve asked for each affidavit multiple times since pulling him and Mrs Hayes has ignored each request. I walked in to an assembly to a teach SCREAMING at my son for bumping into her - he had just lost his eye and was learning this new normal. My husband confronted the teacher and she had the worst attitude. My son was never safe here. And it’s sad because there are few teachers and staff that are absolute angels in this poor environment. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
