Jefferson Elementary Center

Summary:

Jefferson Elementary Center is a public elementary school in Parkersburg, West Virginia, serving 567 students in grades PK-5. While the school is part of the Wood County Schools district, which is ranked 6th out of 55 districts in the state, Jefferson Elementary has struggled academically compared to other schools in the area.

The school's proficiency rates in Mathematics, English Language Arts, and Science are consistently lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the 3rd-grade Mathematics proficiency rate at Jefferson Elementary was 23.9%, compared to 60.4% for the district and 53.2% for the state. Nearby schools like Neale Elementary, Blennerhassett Elementary, and Gihon Elementary have significantly higher academic performance, with many ranking in the top 25 elementary schools in the state.

Jefferson Elementary Center also faces challenges related to its student demographic composition and socioeconomic status. The school has a predominantly white student population, with 87.3% of students identifying as white, and a high percentage of students from low-income families, with 81.26% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. These factors may contribute to the school's lower academic performance compared to nearby schools with more diverse student populations and lower percentages of students from low-income families.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is an entirely different place with Principal Lowers leading the charge. She has worked hard to make the school and grounds clean and polished. We followed the school on Facebook over the summer and were impressed by all the improvements. My kids come home happy and are eager to go to school. The staff are welcoming and kind. Our kids are excited to go to school and love their teachers. As a parent, knowing my kids are happy and safe is a huge win. Close Quote

Open Quote Wow! Jefferson school and grounds are looking fabulous. Everything is freshly painted, lawns trimmed, upgrades to the building, floors and school clean. Very impressed. I am also so thankful for the staff and all the parent engagement activities JEC provides. I am also very thankful for the staff and all they do to go above and beyond. They greet kids at the door each morning with a smile, wave goodbye and tell students how much they will be missed. Teachers and admin at JEC work hard to show the kids and families that they are loved, valued, respected and will get an equal opportunity of a quality education. The Special Education services and help of the Title 1 teachers is an huge bonus. Although JEC is a high poverty school, they work hard here to support their student's and families needs. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
