Beckley-Stratton Middle School

Summary:

Beckley-Stratton Middle School is a public middle school in Beckley, West Virginia, serving 674 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Raleigh County Schools district, which is ranked 12th out of 55 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating.

Beckley-Stratton has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with 63.95% White, 20.33% African American, 3.12% Hispanic, and 10.98% two or more races. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by state assessments, is generally lower than the Raleigh County and West Virginia averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, the school's 6th-grade math proficiency rate was 36.2%, compared to 42.4% for Raleigh County and 30.9% for the state. Beckley-Stratton's statewide ranking has fluctuated over the years, ranging from 94th out of 169 middle schools to 160th out of 171, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger in the most recent year.

While Beckley-Stratton performs better for African American and White students compared to other subgroups, the school lags behind many of the nearby middle schools, such as Trap Hill Middle School, Shady Spring Middle School, and Park Middle School, in academic measures and statewide rankings. Despite having higher per-student spending than the state average, Beckley-Stratton's academic performance suggests that factors beyond just funding may be contributing to the school's challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My child is in 8th grade. This year and this school is the worst I have seen since he has been in school. The majority (not all) of his teachers, and the principal as well, seem to take very little interest in helping those students who need some extra help (my child's typical grades range from A to C, so this is not about his grades). I have spoken with some teachers, as well as the principal, who, at times, are arrogant and portray a condescending attitude. Results speak for themselves - look at percent meeting standard on this website as well as on the WVDE ZOOMWV website. Very poor school. We have already decided to homeschool next year. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
