Summary:

Wheeling Park High School is a public high school in Wheeling, West Virginia, serving 1,490 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Ohio County Schools district, which is ranked 2nd out of 55 districts in the state and has a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger. Wheeling Park High School has consistently been one of the top-performing high schools in West Virginia, ranking in the top 20 for several years.

Wheeling Park High School stands out for its strong academic performance, with 61% of 11th-grade students proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the state average of 50.8%, and 27.7% proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to the state average of 17.9%. The school also has a more diverse student population than nearby schools like Brooke High School (94.58% White) and Cameron High School (97.76% White), with 83.09% White, 5.84% African American, 1.81% Hispanic, and 1.48% Asian students. However, the school's performance for African American and Hispanic students is more mixed, indicating a need to address any achievement gaps.

Despite spending $14,992 per student, which is higher than the spending at Brooke High School ($15,416) and Cameron High School ($17,834), Wheeling Park High School's performance does not necessarily translate to better student outcomes compared to nearby schools. This suggests that factors beyond just funding, such as effective resource allocation and instructional practices, play a crucial role in student success. The school's ranking has also fluctuated over the years, and understanding the reasons behind these changes could provide valuable insights for the school's continuous improvement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Mediocre, self-centered teachers without a serious degree of engagement with the students, and an inability to apply modern pedagogy. Many lower class students with behavior problems in respect, courtesy and beligerance. Principal is not engaged. Overemphasis on Fine Arts with a tremendous naivety to realize Fine Arts do not pay the bills or create a leadership position for a country; science, math and engineering do and they are insufficiently emphasized. Less than 50% of the students are proficient in math, reading, science by WESTEST. How in the hell can School Digger give this school such a high rating. School Digger has absolutely no credibility. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
