Paw Paw High School

Summary:

Paw Paw High School is a small public high school serving grades 7-12 in Paw Paw, West Virginia, with a student population of just 72 students. The school is part of the Morgan County Schools district, which is ranked 28 out of 55 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Paw Paw High School stands out in several ways compared to nearby schools like Berkeley Springs High School. The student population is more racially homogeneous, with 79.17% white students, compared to 94.69% at Berkeley Springs. Academically, Paw Paw High School has seen fluctuating performance, ranking as high as 16th out of 122 West Virginia high schools in 2016-2017 but dropping to 66th out of 112 in 2023-2024, with a 2-star rating. This is below the state and district averages, particularly in math and science. However, the school has a very low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 7.4 to 9.6 over the past three years, significantly lower than the 15.5 ratio at Berkeley Springs High School.

Paw Paw High School also faces socioeconomic challenges, with 63.64% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch in 2020-2021, suggesting a higher proportion of students from low-income backgrounds compared to surrounding schools. While these challenges are concerning, the school's small size and low student-teacher ratio indicate potential opportunities for targeted interventions and support to improve student outcomes. By addressing the identified areas of concern and learning from the successes of nearby schools, Paw Paw High School can work towards better serving the needs of its community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My children are enrolled at Paw Paw Schools. I have a fifteen-year old that is graduating this year, a fourteen-year old that is in the ninth grade and a ten-year old in the fourth grade. The staff/teachers promote hard work and determination. As evidenced by their West Test scores, it pays off. I have seen, time and time again, people share negative opinions about our school including the size, voting to shut it down and bus the students to Berkeley Springs, etc., but I feel that my children are exactly where they need to be. All three of my kids are honor-roll students and do very well on state testing. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
