Lakewood Elementary School

Summary:

Lakewood Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Saint Albans, West Virginia, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 288. The school is part of the Kanawha County Schools district, which is ranked 30 out of 55 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Lakewood Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of West Virginia elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger indicating below-average performance. The school's proficiency rates in mathematics, English language arts, and science are generally lower than the Kanawha County Schools and West Virginia state averages. Lakewood Elementary also has a predominantly white student population, with 91.67% of students identifying as white, which is significantly higher than the state and district averages. While the school's performance for African American students has been strong, its performance for other student subgroups, such as white students, multi-racial students, and students with special needs or low socioeconomic status, has been below average.

Compared to nearby schools in the Kanawha County district, such as Nitro Elementary, Cross Lanes Elementary, and Andrews Heights Elementary, Lakewood Elementary's performance is generally lower, with these schools having higher rankings, better test scores, and serving more diverse student populations. Lakewood Elementary's declining performance over the past 5 years, from a 4-star rating to a 1-star rating, is also concerning and suggests the need for targeted interventions to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have a child who attends Lakewood and I have been very pleased with the teachers he has had, the amount of interest they take in making sure my child succeeds, and the communication I receive from the school. It has been my observation that the principal goes out of her way to be very involved in what goes on in the school, and she creates and maintains a very positive atmosphere. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
