Sequim Middle School

Summary:

Sequim Middle School is a public middle school serving 568 students in grades 6-8 in Sequim, Washington. The school has a predominantly White student population, with significant Hispanic and multi-racial representation. However, Sequim Middle School has seen a declining statewide ranking in recent years, now ranking 281 out of 539 middle schools in the state.

One of the key insights about Sequim Middle School is its subgroup performance disparities. While the school performs well for its Hispanic student population, ranking 71 out of 344 middle schools in Washington for this subgroup, its performance for White students and multi-racial students is relatively lower, ranking 287 and 132 out of their respective state-level subgroups. Additionally, Sequim Middle School's test scores in English Language Arts and Math are generally below the state and district averages, with proficiency rates of 48.74% and 39.56%, respectively, compared to the state averages of 52.63% and 41.68%. The school has also seen a significant increase in the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, from 39.6% in 2020-2021 to 51.94% in 2022-2023.

When compared to nearby schools, such as Stevens Middle School and Blue Heron Middle School, Sequim Middle School has lower statewide rankings and generally underperforms in terms of test scores. Additionally, Sequim Middle School's spending per student ($15,652 in 2021-2022) is lower than Stevens Middle School ($17,743 in 2021-2022) and Blue Heron Middle School ($19,882 in 2021-2022), which may contribute to the school's challenges. These comparisons suggest that Sequim Middle School faces greater obstacles in providing a high-quality education to its students, and the school may need to implement targeted strategies to address these issues and improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have a sixth grader so our experience is fairly limited thus far. That being said, I find the teachers to be enthusiastic and genuine. The campus is nice. The fact that 48 of the students qualify for free or reduced lunches is not a plus, but it reflects the economy of the area and not just on the school.
Overall I think we are blessed to have such a great school in our area. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
