Leschi Elementary School

Summary:

Leschi Elementary School is a public elementary school in Seattle, Washington, serving 275 students in grades K-5. Located in a diverse neighborhood, the school stands out for its balanced racial makeup, with a mix of White, African American, Hispanic, Asian, and multiracial students.

Academically, Leschi Elementary has faced some challenges, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts (53.33%) and Math (43.44%) falling below the Seattle School District and Washington state averages. The school's statewide ranking has fluctuated over the years, ranging from 573rd out of 1,168 Washington elementary schools (3 stars) to 948th out of 1,106 (1 star). Notably, Leschi's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with White students performing much better than African American and low-income students.

Leschi Elementary is located near several higher-performing schools, such as Hawthorne Elementary, Beacon Hill International School, and Stevens Elementary, which consistently outperform Leschi in academic achievement and statewide rankings. The school's fluctuating performance and the significant racial and socioeconomic disparities within its student population suggest the need for targeted interventions and a closer examination of resource allocation to ensure equitable opportunities for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The school is very inclusive, welcoming families from a broad variety of backgrounds with Montessori and conventional classroom options. The teachers are top notch, an observation that I've heard repeated from parents who are or were teachers themselves. Enrollment has consistently grown over the years and test scores have gradually increased.

The PTA was reinvigorated around 2009 and coordinates its activities well with the school needs. Overall, PTA financial support has steadily grown from a few thousand to nearly $50,000. These funds are used wisely to mainly support teachers needs in their classrooms, as well as the library and technology center. There are many, many other positive things about the school. It isn't perfect, but it is very, very good and the trend lines are positive. Close Quote

Open Quote Shocked!!! Shocked!!! I have no idea why this school has only a one star rating. No school in Seattle is more loving, caring, diverse, socially aware, and proud. The PTA is insanely excellent, creative and resourceful. The student body is one of the most engaged my child has EVER experienced within the OUTSTANDING Montessori tract. Our Principle Toner is one of the most hands-on, hardest working, mother of twins -- School Leader on Earth. One only has to walk the halls to see the incredible artwork on the walls. Leschi participates with "Seattle Music Partners" for Orchestra and Band at NO COST to parents or students including musical instruments for said program. Leschi has one of the States best elementary school Chess Clubs, Reading Clubs, Language Clubs. I give this hidden treasure of a school 5 out of 5 stars and would happily offer 10 out of 10. Do not be fooled by such a ridiculous rating. It is no where near reality. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
