Graham Hill Elementary School

Summary:

Graham Hill Elementary School is a public elementary school in Seattle, Washington, serving students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Seattle School District No. 1. The school has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup that includes 19.78% White, 26.12% African American, 25% Hispanic, 17.91% Asian, and 10.07% two or more races.

Despite being part of a highly-ranked school district, Graham Hill Elementary School has consistently underperformed compared to the district and the state of Washington in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Math proficiency. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 41.12% of students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 67.59% in the Seattle School District and 52.63% statewide. In Math, only 35.51% of students were proficient or better, compared to 58.68% in the district and 41.68% statewide. The school's performance in Science is slightly better, with 50% of students proficient or better, but still lags behind the district and state.

When compared to nearby schools, such as Rising Star Elementary School and Hawthorne Elementary School, Graham Hill Elementary School generally underperforms in academic achievement. The school's struggles to support the academic success of certain student subgroups, particularly African American, Hispanic, and low socioeconomic status students, are also concerning. Addressing the underlying factors, such as socioeconomic status and resource allocation, could be key to improving the school's educational outcomes and providing a more equitable learning environment for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
