Covington Elementary School

Summary:

Covington Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 631 students in grades PK-5 in the Kent School District in Covington, Washington. The school has a more racially diverse student population and higher rates of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch compared to many nearby schools, but its academic performance, as measured by test scores, is generally lower than the district and state averages.

Covington Elementary's proficiency rates in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math are below the state average, with only 44.55% of students proficient or better in ELA in 2023-2024, compared to 52.63% statewide. The school's performance has been inconsistent over the years, with its statewide ranking ranging from 565th to 828th out of around 1,100-1,200 Washington elementary schools. In comparison, Sunrise Elementary, just 2.6 miles away, had significantly higher proficiency rates across all grade levels.

The high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, as well as the school's racial diversity, may be contributing factors to the lower academic performance at Covington Elementary. However, the school's relatively high spending per student and low student-teacher ratio suggest that resources are not the primary issue. Targeted interventions and support will be necessary to address the achievement gaps and improve overall academic outcomes at Covington Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My kids are attending Covington Elementary for few years now and school seems to be getting better until this school year.
Under the new readership, school has dramatically changed. There were always few disruptive kids each classes, but this year, one of my kid's class was out of control. The certain kids were always fighting or cussing and destructs the class. Few time through the school year, other students had to move to other classes because fighting got so bad. Those problem were always started by the same students, yet school won't remove from the class or won't even move to other class.

I guess KSD has a policy that "everyone gets the same education". Because if disrupted kids were removed from classroom they lose opportunity to learn. So kids who wants to learn need deal with them. That's what KSD office told us. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
