Midland Elementary

Summary:

Midland Elementary is a public elementary school in Tacoma, Washington, serving 469 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Franklin Pierce School District, which is ranked 205 out of 247 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Midland Elementary has a diverse student population, with higher percentages of Hispanic (27.29%) and multi-racial (20.04%) students compared to nearby schools. The school's academic performance, as measured by state assessments, is generally lower than the district and state averages, particularly in 5th-grade Math where only 18.57% of students are proficient, compared to 42.96% statewide. However, Midland Elementary's rankings for specific student subgroups, such as African American, Hispanic, and multi-racial students, are relatively higher, suggesting the school may be providing targeted support that benefits these populations.

Compared to nearby schools like James Sales Elementary, Elmhurst Elementary, and Central Avenue Elementary, Midland Elementary has lower academic achievement and a higher percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. While the school's overall ranking has declined in recent years, its relative strengths in supporting specific student subgroups suggest opportunities for targeted interventions to improve academic outcomes for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is new and innovative. My daughters get to stay with the teachers that they had in the first grade through the second grade. This is a way to create consistency in their lives. Thumbs up to this school for looking out for the children and the summer packets were very helpful!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
