The school is part of the Evergreen School District, which is ranked 185 out of 247 school districts in Washington and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Pioneer Elementary has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with a higher percentage of Hispanic (42.86%) and two or more races (9.16%) students, its academic performance consistently ranks in the bottom quarter of Washington elementary schools, between 788-943 out of 1,100-1,168 schools over the past 8 years. The school struggles the most with math proficiency, with only 29.71% of students proficient or better in 2023-2024, compared to 30.37% for the district and 41.68% for the state. Pioneer Elementary's performance is particularly low for English Language Learner (ELL) and Low Socioeconomic Status (SES) student groups, ranking in the bottom 25% of Washington elementary schools.

Despite having a relatively high per-student spending of $17,178 in 2021-2022 and a lower student-teacher ratio of 15.1 in 2022-2023, Pioneer Elementary's academic performance has declined over the years, with its statewide ranking dropping from 446 out of 1,067 schools in 2014-2015 to 943 out of 1,168 schools in 2023-2024. This trend is concerning and suggests the need for a closer examination of the school's instructional practices, curriculum, and support systems. Nearby schools in the Evergreen School District, such as Harmony Elementary, Burnt Bridge Creek Elementary, and York Elementary, generally outperform Pioneer Elementary academically, providing valuable insights into effective practices that could be replicated.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter is now in 3rd grade at Pioneer, and has been a student since K. Generally, the school facilities seem satisfactory, and staff / teachers seem concerned and dedicated. My daughter has tested and was accepted to the excel program, so I was honestly a bit shocked to learn that it ranked so low. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
