Graham Kapowsin High School

Summary:

Graham Kapowsin High School is a public high school in Graham, Washington, serving 2,011 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Bethel School District, which is ranked 141 out of 247 school districts in the state.

While Graham Kapowsin High School has a diverse student population, with nearly half of the students identifying as non-White, the school has struggled academically compared to the state and district averages. Its proficiency rates in English Language Arts, Math, and Science are all below the Bethel School District and Washington state averages. The school's four-year graduation rate of 93.6% is higher than the district and state, but its dropout rate of 3.4% is also higher. Additionally, a significant portion (48.98%) of the student body comes from low socioeconomic backgrounds, which may contribute to the academic challenges.

Compared to other high schools in the area, such as Emerald Ridge High School and Gov. John Rogers High School, Graham Kapowsin High School generally underperforms academically. The school also faces achievement gaps for certain student subgroups, particularly Asian, African American, and Special Education students. While the school's diversity is a strength, more targeted interventions and support may be needed to improve overall student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote There are more teachers there than do not care than do. There is one particular math teacher who has more than 90% of his students fail his class and the administration will do nothing about him. They push the kids to take several AP classes in order to look good as a school. There is a serious bullying problem at that school and in the handbook it states that it is not tolerated, however, the administration turns a blind eye to the bullying. Just last year they had a student commit suicide over being bullied, yet the administration continues to allow it to go on. They have "orange and blue starts with you" days, but even the kids say that it is a joke. This school is more worried about looking good that it covers up anything that will show how it really is. They would not let my child out of the school to attend another Bethel school so we signed her up for running start, just to get her out of there. The following year we appealed and she was allowed to leave. A friend of mine had the same problem and they actually had to move out of the district to get away. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
