Roy Elementary

Summary:

Roy Elementary is a public elementary school serving grades K-5 in the Bethel School District in Washington state, with 306 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.2. The school's student population is predominantly White (72.55%), with smaller percentages of Hispanic (11.44%) and two or more races (12.75%).

Despite the school's relatively high per-student spending of $20,849, Roy Elementary has consistently been ranked in the bottom half of Washington elementary schools, with a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's academic performance, as measured by SBAC/WCAS test scores, is consistently below the Bethel School District and Washington state averages across all grades and subjects. For example, in 2023-2024, only 39.29% of all students at Roy Elementary were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 49.89% in the district and 52.63% statewide.

When compared to other nearby schools, such as Elk Plain School of Choice and Rainier Elementary, Roy Elementary generally underperforms academically. Additionally, the school's performance has been declining over the years, with its statewide ranking dropping from 670 out of 1,056 in 2016-2017 to 812 out of 1,168 in the most recent year. This trend is concerning and suggests that the school may need to implement significant interventions and improvements to address the academic challenges facing its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Some staff are nice, some of the teachers are questionable, and I have had some negative experiences with certain teachers. Seems as if it is a test school for new teachers (most of whom would fail at teaching in the rest of the district). Of the teachers who are there the ones that have been teaching for a while are great. Not enough clubs or activities for students. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
