Middle Schools in University Place School District

The University Place School District is home to two middle schools, Narrows View Intermediate and Drum Intermediate, which serve students in grades 6-8. Narrows View Intermediate stands out as the top-performing middle school in the district, consistently ranking among the top 30 middle schools in Washington state and earning a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Academically, Narrows View Intermediate outperforms the district and state averages in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Math proficiency across all grade levels. In 2023-2024, 76.33% of Narrows View Intermediate students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 70.6% for the district and 52.63% for the state. In Math, 69.23% of Narrows View Intermediate students were proficient or better, compared to 59.18% for the district and 41.68% for the state. In contrast, Drum Intermediate's performance is more mixed, with some grade levels exceeding the district and state averages, while others fall behind.

Both schools have a diverse student population, with Narrows View Intermediate having a slightly higher percentage of White students (46.49%) compared to Drum Intermediate (44.8%), and Drum Intermediate having a higher percentage of Hispanic students (17.04%) compared to Narrows View Intermediate (14.61%). Additionally, both schools have a significant percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, with Drum Intermediate having a slightly higher rate (47.87%) compared to Narrows View Intermediate (45.65%). The per-student spending is similar between the two schools, but Narrows View Intermediate has a higher student-teacher ratio of 18.4, compared to Drum Intermediate's ratio of 16.8.
