Hampton Oaks Elementary

Summary:

Hampton Oaks Elementary is a public elementary school in Stafford, Virginia, serving 894 students in grades K-5 and part of the Stafford County Public Schools district.

Hampton Oaks has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with higher percentages of Hispanic (28.3%) and African American (10.63%) students. However, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Virginia elementary schools, maintaining a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. Its performance on SOL tests varies significantly, with multi-racial and disabled students struggling the most, while Hispanic and English Language Learner students perform relatively better. The school has also seen a significant increase in the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, from 22.84% in 2021-2022 to 31.99% in 2022-2023.

When compared to nearby schools like Margaret Brent Elementary, Hampton Oaks generally underperforms on academic measures, such as SOL test scores. For example, in 2023-2024, Hampton Oaks' 3rd-grade math proficiency rate was 56.8%, compared to 87.68% at Margaret Brent. This gap in academic performance is consistent across grade levels and subject areas, indicating Hampton Oaks is facing increasing challenges in providing a high-quality education to its students, which may be related to the growing population of economically disadvantaged and underperforming student subgroups.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have never once had an issue with a teacher, administrator, or faculty member at this school, and I truthfully have two rather difficult, rather willful children enrolled here. Every member of the staff , from what I have been able to observe, is well engaged in the development and teaching of each and every child, and does everything they can to make sure that the students (not the parents or the external influences) come first.
I applaud the school as a whole, and would highly recommend any parent with an elementary school aged child to consider placement at Hampton Oaks Elementary, and within the Hampton Oaks community. There are military kids, transitional kids, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Middle Eastern, Indian, Polynesian...affluent, struggling, every race, creed, and background. It's one of the more well rounded schools I've seen as a parent, without the complications that you may expect from the more urban or city oriented school environments.
Huge kudos to this school. My children are definitely benefiting from the work being done there, and it shows in their daily interactions with every other kid they run into. Close Quote

Open Quote My child previously attended a private school and her level of confidence has improved since being enrolled at Hampton Oaks. The teachers all care about the students and show a true interest in their individual growth and success. I think the low test scores are reflective of the amount of military families living in the area. Many of these families would not be as familiar with Virginia history as students living in other areas. It's disheartening to see such a great school get such a low rating on here. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
