Back Creek Elementary

Summary:

Back Creek Elementary is a high-performing public elementary school in Roanoke, Virginia, serving 294 students in grades PK-5 and part of the Roanoke County Public Schools district.

Back Creek Elementary consistently ranks among the top elementary schools in Virginia, with exceptional academic achievement. The school's students demonstrate significantly higher proficiency rates on SOL (Standards of Learning) assessments compared to the Roanoke County and Virginia state averages across various subjects and grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, 88.89% of 3rd graders at Back Creek Elementary were proficient or better in SOL Mathematics, compared to 82.73% for Roanoke County and 70.11% for Virginia. However, the school has a predominantly white student population, with only a small percentage of minority students, which contrasts with the more diverse student populations at nearby schools like Green Valley Elementary and Oak Grove Elementary.

Additionally, Back Creek Elementary serves a relatively affluent community, with only 24.15% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year, ranking 46th out of 1,036 Virginia elementary schools for its low-socioeconomic status student population. This disparity in socioeconomic status may have implications for resource allocation and the availability of support services for students from lower-income families within the Roanoke County Public Schools district. However, the school's low student-teacher ratio of 14.3 students per teacher suggests that it has the resources to provide more individualized attention and support for its students, which may contribute to its strong academic performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I had to pull my child out of this school. If you have a child who has a disability, be very careful, especially on his/her IEP. They try to change my son disability, but the school I transfer him to, did not agree with the special educators at Back Creek Elementary, and therefore change it back to the correct disability on his IEP. Also, one of the special educator teachers was yelling at my child and my child would come home crying periodically. When I ask if there is another way she can speak to him, she reply, "I don't know another way". I feel if she has the experience and the back ground in special education, then there are several ways to approach a child with a disability. Every child is different and if you only have one approach, that might not work with every child. From my experience, a child who is a minority and has a disability will not be successful at this school because you are being judge as you walk through the door. If you have the passion and the experience, color should not matter. As you can see by the numbers, the diversity is not there. On another note, the principal on the other hand is not open minded and she lacks people skills, and maybe she can't understand how a parent feels because she does not have any biological kids of her own. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
