Monterey Elementary

Summary:

Monterey Elementary is a public elementary school in Roanoke, Virginia, serving around 490 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Roanoke City Public Schools district, which is ranked 119 out of 130 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Monterey Elementary has a diverse student population, with a significant percentage of Hispanic (30.41%) and African American (24.08%) students, which is higher than nearby schools like Bonsack Elementary and Mountain View Elementary. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by SOL test scores, is generally lower than the district and state averages, particularly for white and male students. Monterey Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom 25% of Virginia elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger, in contrast to the higher-performing Roanoke County Public Schools.

The extremely high percentage of students (over 99%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch at Monterey Elementary suggests that the school serves a population with significant economic challenges, which may be contributing to the lower academic performance. The widening achievement gap between Monterey and the state and district averages, as well as the racial disparities in performance, highlight the need for targeted interventions and support to address these issues and improve educational outcomes for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The teachers care about the students. They don't just up them a grade unless the knowledge and maturity is consistent with the child and grade. The teachers go beyond to make sure every student has the work down pat. The physical education teacher, librarian, principal all do their best to ensure the safety of the students. I don't think the school is considered through the roanoke city school board enough for feild trips such as field trips like Monticello and jamestown or even our state capital for the kids learning about our history. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
