Elizabeth Vaughan Elementary

Summary:

Elizabeth Vaughan Elementary is a public magnet elementary school in Woodbridge, Virginia, serving 564 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Prince William County Public Schools district, which is ranked 39 out of 130 school districts in Virginia and has a 4-star rating.

While Elizabeth Vaughan Elementary has a significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (64.01%) compared to the surrounding schools, which range from 34.12% to 75.21% Hispanic, the school consistently ranks in the bottom 20% of Virginia elementary schools with a 1-star rating. This is significantly lower than the nearby Featherstone Elementary, Potomac View Elementary, and Occoquan Elementary, which have rankings ranging from the top 30% to the bottom 60% of Virginia elementary schools. Elizabeth Vaughan's student proficiency rates in SOL assessments for Mathematics, Science, and English Reading are also consistently lower than the Prince William County Public Schools district and the state of Virginia averages.

Despite the high percentage of economically disadvantaged students at Elizabeth Vaughan Elementary, with 88.12% to 90.6% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, the school's per-student spending is on par with the surrounding schools. Additionally, the school has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 12.2 to 14.8 students per teacher in recent years. These factors suggest that funding and class size may not be the primary contributors to the school's lower academic performance, which is significantly behind that of its neighboring schools serving similar student populations.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote It's a shame to see Vaughan continually get worse each year. Enrollment has increased each year, the student/teacher ratio continue to increase and then you see test score averages drop and statewide performance drop. I have three kids, one just finished Vaughan, one son going into the 4th grade and one starting kindergarten soon at this school.

I've had issues with the lack of communication from school staff, lack of professionalism from staff and certain teachers, poor management from the front office. They've replaced the principle and assistant principle just recently, however so far I've seen little to no improvement.

They need an overhaul the management there, focus on accountability for some of these teachers, and stop making excuses. Just to clarify, there are several excellent..excellent teachers there that care for the kids, however there are also some bad apples. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
