Larchmont Elementary

Summary:

Larchmont Elementary is a public elementary school in Norfolk, Virginia, serving 471 students in grades PK-5. Despite being part of the Norfolk City Public Schools district, which is ranked 105 out of 130 districts in Virginia, Larchmont Elementary consistently ranks among the top 25% of Virginia elementary schools and outperforms the district and state averages on standardized tests.

Larchmont Elementary's academic performance is particularly impressive, with 92.19% of 3rd graders, 75.32% of 4th graders, and 74.39% of 5th graders proficient or better in SOL Mathematics, compared to just 56.74%, 57.66%, and 53.38% for the Norfolk City Public Schools district, respectively. The school's diverse student population, with 56.26% White, 22.08% African American, 6.58% Hispanic, and 4.03% Asian students, also stands out, as it is higher than many of the nearby schools, such as Camp Allen Elementary, P.B. Young Senior Elementary, and Walter Herron Taylor Elementary, which tend to have higher concentrations of African American and Hispanic students.

Despite the school's relatively low-income student population, with 29.91% to 97.24% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch over the past three school years, Larchmont Elementary maintains a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 14.3 to 15.1, which is lower than many of the nearby schools. This combination of academic excellence, diversity, and socioeconomic challenges suggests that Larchmont Elementary may be a model for how to effectively serve diverse and low-income student populations, outperforming many of the other schools in the Norfolk City Public Schools district.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Class size is becoming an issue and the student ratio shown here is very inaccurate. My child was 1 of 27 kids in kindergarten with only 1 teacher for all those kids. This year it is the same thing. 1 teacher for 25-27 first graders. There are no full-time aids in the classroom and there are no plans to hire another teacher. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
