Achievable Dream Academy

Summary:

Achievable Dream Academy is an elementary public magnet school in Newport News, Virginia, serving 582 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. With a diverse student population that is predominantly African American, the school consistently outperforms the Newport News City Public Schools district and the state of Virginia in academic performance.

Achievable Dream Academy's standout metrics include higher proficiency rates in SOL/Mathematics and SOL/English Reading compared to district and state averages, as well as a higher statewide ranking and rating than other Virginia elementary schools. The school's African American students and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds also perform better than their counterparts in the state. Additionally, Achievable Dream Academy maintains a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 15.3 to 16.7 over the past three school years.

While Achievable Dream Academy is a high-performing school within the Newport News City Public Schools district, there are some nearby schools in the Hampton City Public Schools district, such as Mary W. Jackson Elementary and Armstrong Elementary, that have even higher academic achievement and statewide rankings. Nevertheless, Achievable Dream Academy's consistent performance and focus on supporting its diverse student population make it a standout elementary school in the region.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is terrible. I understand that schools are rated according to test rating but the principal is never available to talk.Mr.Hurdle the 3-5 assistant principal brushes you off. If you have a child with disability with proper documentation. A meeting will be held to appease you. Nothing will come off it. They even put children on half days. YES,HALF days and will not send a notice home. I have and always will be an active parent and I fight with this school daily and the school board has been informed of all issues. The class size is typical which is 20 to 1 the school day starts at 8:50 the kids receive a milk and breakfast bar then off to resources yes (some type of P.E., library, art or music) I personally think curriculum should come first but I'm no teacher. Then shortly after is lunch and outside time. Then finally your child has 2.5 hours of lesson. I am amazed that they are 746th on the schooldigger.com website. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
