Riverside Elementary

Summary:

Riverside Elementary is a public elementary school in Newport News, Virginia, serving 481 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Newport News City Public Schools district, which is ranked 110 out of 130 districts in Virginia and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Riverside Elementary faces significant challenges compared to nearby schools. It has a more diverse student population, with a higher percentage of African American (44.91%) and Hispanic (10.19%) students than surrounding schools. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by SOL (Standards of Learning) test scores, is consistently lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Riverside Elementary's 3rd-grade math proficiency rate was 49.41%, compared to the district's 55.57% and the state's 70.11%. The school has also consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of Virginia elementary schools, with a ranking between 913-1022 out of over 1,100 schools and a 0-1 star rating from SchoolDigger over the past several years.

The nearby Hilton Elementary and Deer Park Elementary, which are also part of the Newport News City Public Schools district, significantly outperform Riverside Elementary in terms of school ranking, academic performance, and student demographics. This suggests that factors beyond just district-level policies and resources may be contributing to the disparities in educational outcomes. Additionally, Riverside Elementary's performance has steadily declined over the past decade, from a high of 3 stars and a ranking in the top half of Virginia elementary schools in 2013-2014 to its current 1-star rating and bottom quarter ranking. This trend is concerning and indicates a need for targeted interventions and support to address the underlying issues.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Riverside goes out of its way to provide students with a feeling of pride and self-worth. Both my children have attended Riverside and I am very pleased with their teachers. Each child was encouraged to develop their own intellectual interest and was supported in their drive to succeed. Riverside has that feeling of caring which is so important to children of this age. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
