Elko Middle

Summary:

Elko Middle is a public middle school in Sandston, VA, serving 730 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Henrico County Public Schools district, which is ranked 88 out of 130 school districts in Virginia and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Elko Middle faces significant challenges, with a student population that is 60.82% African American, significantly higher than the surrounding schools. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom 10-15% of Virginia middle schools over the past several years, with a 0 or 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Its proficiency rates on SOL/Standards of Learning tests are significantly lower than the state and district averages across most subject areas and grade levels, with 6th-8th grade math proficiency ranging from 27.81% to 35.09%, compared to state averages of 50.1% to 59.41%. Additionally, Elko Middle has an extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 65.57% to 89.04% over the past few years.

While Elko Middle's performance is concerning, some of the nearby schools in the Richmond City Public Schools, Chesterfield County Public Schools, and Hanover County Public Schools districts also struggle with low test scores and rankings, suggesting broader systemic issues in the region. Addressing the challenges at Elko Middle will likely require a multi-faceted approach that goes beyond just increasing funding or resources, and may involve targeted interventions to support the school's most vulnerable student populations.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote horrible staff. disgusting lunches that are sometimes days old. many openly racist/sexist/homophobic teachers and staff. no one listens or cares about the students concerns until the media brings attention to it and they are forced to actually do something. teachers almost never submit grades on time or they just don't grade assignments at all. the amount of work that is thrown on to students all at once is unacceptable. this school needs to change not only for the students benefit but for the community too. Open Quote Amazing to read a review from non-parenting folk who fail to teach their kids any kind of manners get on here and bash the teachers/admin who actually work to help their childs behavior and attitude. If your child come to school at Elko to learn, is respectful of adults, and can act appropriately - then they will have no issues! If you expect middle school to be like Day-Care where your child acts however disrespectful as they want and you expect nothing to happen - then they will have problems! Getting good teachers and a dedicated principal is not easy in this part of town - not when they could be in the west end of henrico for the same money! Respect the fact that they are there each and every day to work with your child! Teachers/admin pay taxes too - That means you dont have the "right" to abuse them any more than they can abuse you for being a crappy parent! So work WITH them - acknowledge that your child is not always perfect, deserves a consequence for their actions at times, and are not on the same respect level as the adults. Twice ive come up to the school to pick up my daughter only to hear the ghetto scream in the middle of the office from a parent - cussing and threats! - how do you expect your kid to act when you be setting that example?? Elko is an excellent school, we are lucky to have the dedicated principal and teachers - we chose it over the other two options in Henrico because my girls are safe there, and they are learning! Yes it is strict - but for good reason - support Elko! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
