Quioccasin Middle is a public middle school in Richmond, Virginia, serving 1,040 students in grades 6-8. It is part of the Henrico County Public Schools district, which is ranked 88 out of 130 school districts in Virginia and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Quioccasin Middle has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with a higher percentage of Hispanic (22.79%) and African American (22.31%) students. However, the school consistently ranks in the bottom quarter of Virginia middle schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Its test scores are generally lower than the Henrico County and Virginia averages, particularly in core subjects like Mathematics and Science. For example, in 2023-2024, only 37.36% of 6th-grade students were proficient or better in SOL/Mathematics, compared to the Henrico County average of 37.75% and the Virginia average of 59.41%. Additionally, Quioccasin Middle has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, reaching 89.42% in the 2022-2023 school year.

Quioccasin Middle's performance lags behind many of the nearby schools, such as Short Pump Middle, Pocahontas Middle, and Robious Middle, which consistently outperform Quioccasin Middle on key metrics. The school's diverse student population and high percentage of students from low-income families may present unique challenges in meeting their educational needs. However, the school's increased spending per student and relatively low student-teacher ratio suggest that there may be opportunities for improvement through targeted interventions and support.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have a 10th grader who attended QMS and a 7th grader currently attending. Both of my kids have had overall positive experiences there. Middle school is very much what you make it. There will be some teachers your kid will like better than others, but I think its beneficial for them to adapt to different teaching styles. There are many clubs and extracurriculars that your child(ren) can join and participate in. There are always opportunities for parents to get involved and help our school be the best it can be. Open Quote Favoritism at its best ! Also, what kind of teacher gives a packet for kids to do over the summer of 5 continents and their capitals and such!??!
Then threatens a test 2 weeks after school starts? Way to stress the child and parent out and make summer non enjoyable. I will be reporting to the superintendent as summer is NOT for school work this intense. Close Quote

Open Quote I have had kids at this school for 4 years and will be there for several more. I have had a very good experience. The teachers are dedicated and supportive, the principals and counselors know all the kids well and work to give them what they need to succeed. The school has classes for advanced and gifted, ESL, and regular ed, with built in collaborative classes as well as self-contained classrooms for those that need it. The diversity is amazing. My child has friends from multiple countries, religions and ethnicities. The school accomodates for fasting children during Ramadan and has kosher options for kids that require it. Other schools might have higher testing ranks, but I feel that the diversity is something that all schools should be so lucky to have. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
