Notably, only 14.03% of Oak Knoll Middle's students were eligible for free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year, which is significantly lower than the state and district averages.

Oak Knoll Middle's academic excellence is not limited to a particular grade level but is evident across all grades, 6th through 8th. When compared to nearby middle schools, such as Bell Creek Middle and Chickahominy Middle, Oak Knoll Middle stands out as a top performer. However, the school's relatively low percentage of free/reduced lunch recipients may suggest potential equity concerns that warrant further investigation.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is inherently racist. It comes from the teachers. It is a horrible representation of Hanover County. Close Quote

Open Quote We moved to Hanover County because of the schools' stellar reputation. About 50 of the teachers are supportive and truly want the students to succeed. But my personal experience has been they have several teachers that bully the students, and are very prejudice and exercise in discrimination against certain students. My child used to enjoy going to school before attending OKMS and now she's fearful of going because of the treatment she's experienced and witnessed her classmates experience from some of her teachers. However, many of the teachers are very supportive and email you when your child is in need of help. But, we've had 3 teachers that have been pure bullies. Minority students especially are signaled out and discriminated against on a daily basis.I would recommend any parent to really do their research before sending their child here.
Additionally, OKMS advocates for the teachers, period. We had a case where the teacher was clearly wrong and apologized and the administration tried to make an excuse and justify the teacher's unprofessional behavior. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
