Woodburn Elementary

Summary:

Woodburn Elementary is a public elementary school in Falls Church, Virginia, serving 498 students in grades PK-6. The school faces significant challenges, with a student population that is 61.24% Hispanic and a very high percentage of students from low-income families, ranging from 61.24% to 93.93% receiving free or reduced-price lunch.

Woodburn Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 10-15% of Virginia elementary schools, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's proficiency rates on the SOL (Standards of Learning) assessments are significantly lower than the Fairfax County Public Schools and Virginia state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 3rd grade math, Woodburn Elementary's proficiency rate was 36.9% compared to 71.31% for Fairfax County and 70.11% for Virginia. The school's student subgroups, such as Hispanic students, English Language Learners, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, perform particularly poorly compared to their peers statewide.

While the surrounding schools in the Fairfax County Public Schools district also serve diverse student populations, they generally perform much better academically than Woodburn Elementary. This suggests that factors beyond just student demographics may be contributing to Woodburn's underperformance. Addressing the school's significant socioeconomic and educational challenges will likely require a comprehensive, multi-faceted approach to improve student learning outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have two academically advanced kids at Woodburn and my experience has been excellent. It's a very socioeconomically diverse school, and I think you can see the benefit of that to the kids. The school might look bad on test scores, but my experience is that's a product of its diversity and not a reflection of the quality of the education or the experience there. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
