Summary:

Hayfield Secondary is a public high school located in Alexandria, Virginia, serving grades 7-12 with a total enrollment of 3,145 students. It is part of the Fairfax County Public Schools district, which is ranked 41 out of 130 school districts in Virginia and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Hayfield Secondary has a relatively diverse student population, with 31.41% White, 26.33% African American, 22.26% Hispanic, and 12.21% Asian students. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by SOL (Standards of Learning) test scores, is generally lower than the Fairfax County Public Schools and Virginia state averages across various subjects and grade levels. For example, in Algebra II for 11th grade, Hayfield Secondary's proficiency rate is 19.05% compared to 43.53% for Fairfax County and 42.2% for Virginia. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with White and multi-racial students performing relatively well, while Asian, African American, and disabled students perform significantly worse.

Hayfield Secondary has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at 31.51% in the 2022-2023 school year, which is higher than some nearby schools like West Springfield High (23.14%) and South County High (23.14%). Additionally, Hayfield Secondary's statewide ranking has steadily declined over the past decade, from a high of 115 out of 322 Virginia high schools in 2013-2014 to a current ranking of 162 out of 329 in 2023-2024, suggesting a potential need for improvement in the school's academic programs and support systems.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Hayfield is a mediocre school. There are a few good teachers, but that number is dwindling. Also, FCPS' funding is becoming less and less. Much of the equipment and computers are more than half a decade old at the least. Also, my PE teacher hands out bad grades left and right for the smallest infractions. Just today, she gave a kid an F for the day because he was scratching his leg during "dynamic stretching." Close Quote

Open Quote I went to this school and now my kids are in this school. There are excellent teachers in this school that have a genuine desire for the students to succeed but they are small in number. Most of the faculty members that I have encountered have been dishonest, manipulative, and very unprofessional. This is school has principals who not only lie to cover up wrong doing of teachers but attempts destroy the future of kids who's parents stand up for them. I used to be a parent who gave the faculty the benefit of the doubt but now that I have experienced first hand how they operate I will no longer be giving them that benefit. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
